Sundiata Rising – Early Resolve
This sketch presents Sundiata at the beginning of his journey, a stage marked by uncertainty but also quiet promise. Born to Sogolon and foretold to become a great ruler, he spent his early years unable to walk, observed with doubt by those who expected a prince to show strength from the start. The loose, searching lines of the drawing reflect this period of hesitation, when the prophecy surrounding him seemed far removed from his lived reality.
Yet within the tentative strokes lies the moment his story begins to shift. As in the epic, where Sundiata first pulls himself upright using an iron rod that bends under his weight, the figure here appears to gather resolve. His posture suggests effort matched with emerging intention, signalling a gradual move from limitation towards capability.
The unfinished nature of the artwork mirrors his early path: a young man still forming his sense of self, quietly preparing to grow into the role destiny promised him. It captures the first signs of persistence—the early, deliberate attempts that lay the foundation for the leader he would eventually become.
